Nine states in the western U.S. and upper Midwest will participate in an IPAWS/EAS regional test in June.The IPAWS Program Office of the Federal Emergency Management Agency is conducting a series of webinars in preparation for the June 15th event (rescheduled from its original date of June 9) in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Wyoming and Washington state. Broadcast and cable operators serving these states are asked to participate in this voluntary test by configuring their EAS devices to forward an EAS message containing an National Periodic Test (NPT) event code.
The first informational event was a non-technical informational conference call on Thursday, May 12, which targeted broadcast managers, program directors, system operators/managers and emergency management personnel. FEMA said that this type of informational call has proven to be a good opportunity to initiate or renew local conversations about alerting needs and how broadcast partners can best fill those needs.
The upcoming DHS-FEMA technical webinars are offered in preparation for voluntary IPAWS/EAS testing using a National Periodic Test (NPT) event code message. DHS-FEMA will present a brief explanation of what IPAWS is and how it works in relation to EAS followed by step by step EAS device configuration instructions for those interested in participating in the test. The same material will be presented in all three webinars, there is no need to try to view more than one webinar. DHS-FEMA is presenting on different dates and times in an attempt to make the presentations more readily available to busy people.
