So much for the old saying about “being glued” to the TV set.  Some studies are showing that about half of Americans are watching other devices while they watch TV.  67 percent report that it makes their TV viewing “somewhat more enjoyable.”  I remember when a bowl of popcorn might have made TV viewing a bit more enjoyable, but who can handle that when your fingers are busy on the laptop keyboard.  OK, so maybe we all paid a bit more attention during the recent Super Bowl and Winter Olympics.

The FCC has announced an extension of the deadline for reply comments to be filed for AM radio revitalization.  A quick view of what the SBE has filed so far in the matter can be seen in this newsletter with a link to the full comments.  I was just in Los Angeles where AM is alive and well.  Amplitude Modulation, still the best place to  punch the KNX 1070 radio preset and get the latest freeway traffic report telling you the reason why your vehicle is only travelling 5MPH.    More comments on the role of AM radio can be seen here:  http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/view?id=7521064426.

Coming to a co/first/second/third-adjacent channel near you LPFM !  Check out Steve Dresser’s Broadcast Activity Report in this Newsletter to see the Central Valley’s latest LPFM updates, and more.  It will be interesting to see how many LPFM’s will actually get the power-to-the-tower as they traverse the learning curve necessary (did someone say EAS requirements ?) to illuminate the On-The-Air Light.

When you have a moment, check out the Glorified Artifacts of Technology web gallery.  Ruth Whiting has created a series of oil paintings themed around ‘Electric Ecology’.  You may view your next hum-drum cabling project a bit differently after seeing her work.

This month’s meeting will be interesting as John Pichitino, Technology Evangelist for Ensemble Designs will be discussing HDMI/SDI routing switcher architecture.  Join us at the Home Town Buffet In Clovis for this hosted lunch event and presentation on Thursday the 27th at noon.
