This year is the 100th Anniversary of the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) and the 50th Anniversary of the Society of Broadcast Engineers.  Those of you who attended the May meeting were able to find out more about the 50 year history of SBE thanks to the video presentation provided by SBE and Mr. Holden.
This weekend (June 27-29) find out about the 100 years of Amateur Radio at one of the local ‘field-day’ events.  ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN!  This is a great event if you’re not a ham radio operator but want to find out more about the hobby.  The 2014 Field Day Event for the Fresno Amateur Radio Club will be located at Dry Creek Park in Clovis (NE corner of Clovis & Alluvial).  Initial antenna setup will start Friday, 6.27.14 around 2PM & continue Saturday, 6.28.14 around 6AM.  Contest operation will commence Saturday 6.28.14 at 11AM until Sunday 6.29.14 at 11AM.  Dinner will be provided for all operators on Saturday evening and breakfast on Sunday morning.  Dedicated stations will be setup for CW, SSB, Digital Packet, 6 & 2 Meters, UHF & QRP/Solar, GOTA and Satellite.  2014 Field Day event T-Shirts will be provided for all “on-the-air” operators.  Public info table will be setup and talk-in on 146.940Mhz.  For additional info or questions please call Ron Hunt at 559-289-8514.

NAB’s Gordon Smith, speaking at a recent ATSC conference stated – “In order for TV to succeed, we must continue to move quickly to increase the number of distribution channels and platforms for our valuable local content, and we must respond to the needs of an ever-more mobile audience,” Smith said. “As broadcasters, it is our job to make sure our signals are available on every device and everywhere — smartphones, laptops, tablets — and of course, multiple channels of digital TV.”    Have the days when the only outlet for a broadcaster was their transmitter come to an end?  So,who gets to distribute and at what cost?  See the Supreme Court ruling concerning the internet service Aereo in this Newsletter.

The June Meeting is coming up. Please join the SBE 66 gang for a hosted lunch presentation on remote site monitoring and control systems by Davicom.  Paul Easter, CPBE, is our guest presenter.
