It occurred to me, while looking around the room full of hungry engineers at our last meeting—a good one it was thanks to Brian Walker of Sennheiser, that a lot of us have been in this business a long time. If you have at least 20 years of compensated professional broadcast engineering or related technologies experience (excluding educational credits) you could be ready for the ultimate SBE certification, CPBE (Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer). Read more about CPBE HERE. A few of our current Chapter 66 members are CPBE; Michael Feist, Allen LeMelle, and Jim Moore. Congratulations!
And congratulations to sixteen-year-old Elif Bilgin from Istanbul, Turkey who has come up with a way to develop a bio-plastic from discarded banana peels. She actually tested it by insulating a copper cable. Perhaps we’ll see some of these bio-plastic coated cables in our facilities someday. We could even leave a few of the unprocessed banana peels next to the cables to slip-up the would-be copper thieves.
While we’re talking about bananas, our ‘Top Banana’ Mr. Holden, has reminded us to start thinking about upcoming pre-winter projects we need to complete. Often overlooked are the signs at the transmitter towers. Avoid that NOV, don’t assume that the sign on your tower will pass inspection. According to the rules:
“…, the Antenna Structure Registration Number must be displayed in a conspicuous place so that it is readily visible near the base of the antenna structure. Materials used to display the Antenna Structure Registration Number must be weather resistant and of sufficient size to be easily seen at the base of the antenna structure.”
But you already knew that, right?
We will all have a chance to check out the towers and more at the upcoming SBE Picnic/BBQ at Meadow Lakes. See all the juicy details in next month’s letter.
Coming up sooner (a lot sooner) is our August meeting. Tom Driggers of RF Specialties and Nautel’s Ellis Terry have a hosted lunch presentation for the SBE 66 group, read more HERE.
